I am currently being asked by my operations group to reduce the variability in LPG flow rate from our FCC gas plant’s de-butaniser, due to downstream equipment problems. The tower is configured with an energy balance control scheme but has anyone tried implementing a material balance control scheme on an equivalent tower? If so, how well did it work?
The tower’s pressure control is via a hot gas bypass and I was thinking of simply setting the LPG flow out of the distillate drum in Auto, controlling the level with the reflux and building a duty controller for the reboiler. The reflux to distillate ratio is about 2.5. Ultimately I would build a DMC controller, which would manipulate the distillate flow (slowly) to handle the quality control issues.
